TESTIMONIALS

Yeny - Mom

Teacher:
..This score will allow him to be promoted to 4th grade.
Yeny:
Thank you Ms. Karen. After 4 years of trying multiple sources of failed reading programs and not seeing any progress in my sons reading. I could breathe easy today. Thank you so much!

Margaret - Teacher

I wanted to share some good news with you. The last few weeks I have seen improvement in Cayden's reading. He is now correctly blending words after he sounds them out. Today he correctly read 19 words for me that included al and all, including words like fall, talk, walrus, etc. It seems like he is now listening to himself as he sounds out the words and is confident in blending them together. This has been so exciting to see and I am grateful for everything you have been doing at home (with tutoring) him.

Jordan - Dad

I feel Huntley has come a long ways and is showing a lot more confidence which has grown from his progress with working with you! It has carried over into his school work and with his interactions with everyone in general. I'm proud of his hard work and I'm excited to see how much more he will grow.

Ms. Evelyn - Grandma

Brayson can't stop talking about how much fun he had in class today. He's happy to have met his new "buddy," William. He demonstrated how his voice could vibrate. He's excited about learning with you. I appreciate you, thank you.

Tatiana - Mom

She was reading on her own in the hall without knowing I was recording. She never does this!

Carey - Principal

Karen,
Thank you for all you have done to support the students. You are an amazing educator. Your passion for students is truly a joy to watch. I also appreciate your commitment to...the mission and vision of (our school).

Amber - Mom

Ms. Karen,
Thanks for being the magic behind the madness. You make learning awesome - one lesson at a time. You rock!

Maxine - Mom

We absolutely love your program and it's very exciting for (my daughter) to start with you. We cannot wait for you to unlock her full potential.

Terran- Mom

I highly recommend Karen! She worked with my son and got him totally up to speed. My son started school right as COVID was closing schools so there were a lot of those phonics that he missed. Karen worked with him and got him up to speed and he is now an excited reader! I suggest if your kids need help you reach out to her ASAP!!

Who is Ms. KaREN &

What is Dyslexia?

Ask schoolteachers what their biggest challenge is, and most will say it is finding that missing puzzle piece for some students that seemingly could not be reached.

Known as Ms. Miller-Martin to her students and parents, over the last 20+ years, Karen has been a tireless teacher, administrator and children’s advocate, invoking skills garnered from her undergraduate and graduate degrees.

She coached sports teams, directed musicals, was a professional athlete & singer, encouraged and taught special needs children all while imparting the “three R’s”, and various other life lessons to impressionable young minds, and maintaining an outstanding level of excellence.

Academic Excellence

Her undergraduate degree - B.A.Hons, Drama in Education, fueled a love for creative, cooperative, diverse, multi-disciplined teaching. With an additional degree in English - B.Ed, the stage was set for more learning.

International Teaching Experience

Teaching in Europe, Canada and the U.S. has given Karen a much broader view of the world and the students she has served.  That perspective broadened even further, many years ago, when Karen was introduced to the warning signs of dyslexia.  “Why wasn’t this taught in teacher’s college?” she contemplated.

What is Dyslexia?

With greater study and research, Ms. Miller-Martin was able to put a finger on what she was seeing in a number of her students.

Dyslexia is inherited and is a “specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.  Difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities.”

In other words, these pupils are intelligent, but may have trouble with oral speech, auditory processing, reading, written expression and spelling.

Personal Experience

When two of her three children began exhibiting the warning signs, Karen didn’t hesitate to intervene. The percentage of people affected by this brain difference is quite alarming: 1 out of every 5 students will be affected – that’s 20%!

Are Schools Equipped to Help?

Finding a school to help with her family in crisis was a fight.  And that fact is exactly why she decided to take on the daunting task of leaving the self-contained classroom to educate and directly support parents, teachers, doctors and children pairing Orton-Gillingham influenced, Barton Reading & Spelling System®, Foundation in Soundsand her own curriculum.

Let's Make a Difference!

After completing the graduate-level course provided by UC San Diego, Karen is a Dyslexia Specialist, Consultant and tutor qualified to accurately screen children and adults for dyslexia, that missing puzzle piece, and further equipped through her decades of teaching to tutor these students so that they see great results.
